BBL BASKETBALL BACK IN MANCHESTER FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY

BBL basketball returns to Manchester for the first time in nearly a decade on Wednesday as Mersey Tigers face Newcastle Eagles in the BBL Trophy semi-final first leg.

The winner of the tie will face Guildford Heat on March 5 at the O2 in London, and the second leg of the semi-final takes place at Newcastle on Friday.

MANCHESTER BASKETBALL BACK IN THE DAY

The sides have already met in the two-leg BBL Cup final, with Tigers overturning a 97-90 defeat in the north east with a stunning 114-85 victory at Echo Arena to reach the title game. September's BBL Championship game between the teams also ended in a big Tigers victory as they hammered Eagles 80-58 in Liverpool.

It will be a homecoming for Tigers players Andy Thomson and James Jones who came through the Manchester Magic junior programme, and Jones can't wait to get into action at the Amaechi Centre: "I'm really looking forward to my first pro game in Manchester. It's where I play in the summer because Magic run an open gym, and although I don't want to jinx things, I'm used to the court.

He continued, "It'll be the first BBL game in Manchester for a long time, and they're doing us a big favour. Hopefully one day there will be a BBL team back in the city again."

Jones knows the threat that a Newcastle team who have won ten straight games pose to the Tigers, "You have to start with the three main scorers - Trey Moore, Joe Chapman and Charles Smith - but they have some really good complimentary players. Those three will score some points whatever you do, but you need to limit them, and stop the energy that the other players bring. Above all, we need to get back to playing the way we were when we knocked them out of the BBL Cup.

Says Jones, "Hopefully Nate [Reinking] will be back with us on Wednesday, but it might be a game-time decision".

Jones is excited about the prospect of playing at the O2, and also wants to put the BBL Cup final disappointment behind him: "Playing at the O2 is a real incentive to get to the final, and after our performance against Sheffield we want to the chance to put that behind us. We won't ever forget that performance, and want to make amends."

Tigers faced a double header against neighbours Cheshire Jets over the weekend, with each side winning on their opponent's court, and Jones was only partially happy with how Mersey played: "Personally I was terrible on Friday, and I think we're suffering from a bit of a cup hangover. We decided to play in the second half, and we probably should have won - although we didn't deserve to.

"It was a role reversal on Sunday. We were up by 17 at half-time, and had expended a lot of energy building that lead. Jets came back in the second half, but we hung on and it was good to get back to win.

Tigers' coach Tony Garbelotto admits that it was hard to lift his side after their loss in the BBL Cup final: "It was extremely hard. I don't think we will get over the loss any time soon. It was not losing that was the problem, it was the way we played and looked physically. It will take real character for these players, myself and staff to raise our level to over come this disappointment.

Eagles player-coach Fab Flournoy knows that facing the same side twice in three days brings different challenges for his team: "It will be an interesting challenge" he said. There will be little time between the games to make practice court adjustments so we will just have to try and adapt our in game strategies. Hopefully the numerous tough games we had earlier on in the season will help prepare us for that."

SHARKS DEMOLISH TIGERS TO RETAIN BBL CUP

BBL Cup Final
Mersey Tigers 66 (10,25,46) (Aliu 21,Sullivan 17, Williams 8)
One Health Sharks Sheffield 93 (20,51,74) (Dagostino 35, Tuck 18, Babalola 14)

One Health Sharks Sheffield tore up the script as they swept aside BBL Championship leaders and pre-game favourites Mersey Tigers to cruise to a stunning 93-66 victory to retain the BBL Cup and claim the first piece of silverware of the season.

Leading the way for the Sharks was playmaker Steve Dagostino who lit up the NIA with some devastating and quite remarkable perimeter shooting. He was crowned MVP after breaking two Cup records by sinking eight triples on his way to a sensational 35 points.

Superb defensively, the Sharks nullified a surprisingly toothless Tigers offence which while naturally blunted by the absence of injured Great Britain star Nate Reinking, spluttered unconvincingly from tip to buzzer.

The Merseysiders endured a torrid time from the perimeter making only 2of 18 while time and time again hitting a brick wall inside as Sharks held firm in what was a memorable team performance.

As good as Dagostino was, perhaps the true catalyst of the Sharks performance was forward Mike Tuck who was hugely influential in the first half and especially during the second quarter.

Both sides started the contest smoothly enough with Andrew Sullivan and Paul Williams scoring four points each for their respective teams but the usually prolific Tigers quickly dried up.

In fact outside of Sullivan and Aliu, they had nothing on offer as Tigers managed only 8 points during the next nine minutes of action and were left reeling as Sharks doubled their total to lead 20-10 at the end of the first period.

Thing then went from bad to worse for Tigers in the second quarter and within 90 seconds, Tony Garbelotto had used up both of his time-outs for the half with his team 14 points behind and with problems at both ends of the court.

Nothing was dropping from downtown and his players were finding little space inside to exploit and trying to force the issue leading to turnovers and charging fouls being called. Defensively, Tigers were giving up far too much both inside and out.

Sharks could smell blood and in the run up to the break they kept their foot on the gas and led by Mike Tuck, stormed into a commanding 32-16 advantage. When Olu Babalola drained a triple against his former club it was 39-17 and the game was slipping away completely from Tigers, a fact underlined when Ryan Patton repeated the trick moments later.

As if to emphasis it wasn't to be their day, they headed into the locker room 51-26 behind having fouled Dagostino on the perimeter in the dying seconds after turning the ball over when they could have had the last shot.

The second half revival which some of the most optimistic of Tigers fans might have hoped for simply never materialised. In fact if anything, Sharks piled on the agony as Dagostino nonchalantly drained yet another three-pointer to put his team an eye popping 62-29 in front and effectively kill off any notion of a famous fight back by Tigers who made little impression in the third period.

They trailed 74-46 heading into the last quarter, and it was a ten minute period which was only ever realistically a countdown to the Sharks celebrating one of the most one-sided finals in memory and to their credit, one of the most impressive performances too.

EAGLES DESTROY SHARKS WITH ANOTHER STUNNING DISPLAY

One Health Sharks Sheffield 79 (16,38,57) (Patton 17, Babalola 15, Tuck 15)
Newcastle Eagles 112 (36,64,88) (Moore 37, Smith 26, Chapman 15)

The Newcastle Eagles made it five league wins in a row as they routed the One Health Sharks Sheffield - fellow title contenders - by 79-112at the EISS. The teams had previously been tied for fourth place in the BBL Championship table, and it's the second time that the Eagles have won in Sheffield this season. The Sharks have now lost their last two league games.

Trey Moore led Newcastle and was just one rebound away from a triple-double with 37 points, 11 assists and 9 boards, while Charles Smith had 26 points. The Eagles, who are unbeaten in the league since October, shot nearly 60% from three-point range as they were 14/24, with Smith scoring 7.

The Eagles set the tone from the outset as they raced into a 10-29 lead after seven minutes, following a 16-3 surge that was capped by a three-pointer from former Shark Andrew Bridge, and included 7 points from Smith. It was Moore who controlled the rest of the period, as he had 16 points and 5 assists in the first ten minutes - shooting 5/5 from the field and 2/2 from beyond the arc.

The visitors pushed the lead through twenty points with an early 7-1 run in the second stanza, including another three-pointer for Smith, and they reached the half century mark after just 13.02 on Moore's old-fashioned three-point play (24-50). The Sharks halted the surge with a 9-2 run, all scored by Paul Williams and Olu Babalola, before Bridge connected on another three which helped the Eagles see it through to half time, up 28-64 with Moore already on 26 points.

The Sharks struggled to eat into the deficit in the third quarter, as Smith hit two three-pointers, the second of which followed a Joe Chapman triple in a rapid 6-0 burst that made the lead 31 at 46-77. After another Smith triple made it 50-82, the hosts hit back as Ryan Patton made 6 straight points; but they still trailed 57-88 going into the fourth.

It would get no better for the Sharks in a free-scoring fourth quarter as the Eagles passed the century mark on Bridge's basket at 65-101 with 5.34 remaining. The lead peaked at 67-106 with 4.30 on the clock as the Eagles saw the game out.

TIGERS WIN AGAIN TO EXTEND THEIR LEAD AT THE TOP OF THE BBL

Mersey Tigers continued to strengthen their grip on the BBL Championship with a hard fought home floor success against Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders who raced out of the blocks to give the home team an early scare.

The Riders rattled off the first ten points of the game which at 8-0 had resulted in Tigers play-caller Tony Garbelotto calling a time-out to address the false start made by his team.

A Nate Reinking free-throw broke their early drought but Riders opened up a double digit deficit at 14-3 before James Jones finally got his team rolling with a three-pointer.

Joseph Harris was certainly enjoying himself and he moved to 8 points for Riders when they went 16-6 in front to restore their ten point lead. However, Tigers posted a 9-0 run as centre Tafari Toney (pictured) started and finished the burst by the home team.

Harris stopped the rot in the last minute with a triple as the visitors clung on to their lead, albeit at a much reduced margin of 21-19.

It was Harris who continued his excellent work after the quarter break as he scored again to go 6 of 7 from the field but it was Tigers guard Perry Lawson who wrestled the initiative away.

He levelled the scores at 24-24 then handed his team their first lead of the game from outside at 27-25. The Tigers defence was turning the screw and kept Riders to just four points in four minutes although they showed composure again to go back in front at 33-31.

Ahead of half-time, the home team made their move and scored 12 of the last 14 points to leave the court 43-35 ahead.

When the teams emerged once more, Andrew Sullivan scored an early three and it was a sign of things to come as the Tigers began to dominate and effectively end the chances of the visitors.

They cruised into a 16 point lead with a powerful third quarter performance and while to their credit, Riders played hard until the final buzzer to reduce the deficit, the home team never looked like they were in any serious danger of giving up their lead.

Reinking kept his team relatively comfortable with some great shooting down the stretch as Tigers secured a weekend win double.

BBL Cup Semi-Final, first leg
Cheshire Jets 85 (21,45,69) (Bell 26, Greer 22, O'Reilly 13)
One Health Sharks Sheffield 107 (26,57,84) (Patton 28, Tuck 21, Williams 19)

The One Health Sharks Sheffield took a step closer to the BBL Cup Final in the new year thanks to an impressive 85-107 victory over the Cheshire Jets in the first leg of their semi-final at the Northgate Arena on Sunday evening.

The first quarter saw both sides trading baskets before back-to-back three pointers from Steve Dagostino and Ryan Patton for the visitors helped them take the score out to 17-26 and despite the Jets bagging the final four points of the period the Sharks headed into the second quarter leading 21-26.

In the second period both teams continued to trade baskets, but the Sharks kept their noses in front throughout the quarter with some more impressive outside shooting from Patton taking the score out to 37-51 midway through the period. The visitors held off a resilient finish to the period from the home side to head into the locker rooms leading 45-57 at the half.

In the second half the Jets started the third quarter with a 12-2 burst to get right back into the game and trim the deficit to just two points at 57-59, but the Sharks, thanks in no small part to Patton (who seems to love the Northgate Arena), began to find their range from beyond the three-point arc as he bagged five three's in the third period to help the Sharks out to a 69-84 lead heading into the final stanza.

In the final quarter the Sharks continued to extend their lead and another three-pointer, this time from Olu Babalola, gave the Sharks their biggest lead of the game at 80-107 with less than a minute remaining.

The home side bagged the final five points of the game, but it was the Sharks who head into the second leg on Friday evening at the EISS, with a significant advantage.

Patton (pictured above) bagged a game-high 28 points for the visitors, including 8/14 from the arc, while Jeremy Bell led the scoring for the Jets with 26 points personal.

TIGERS DESTROY EAGLES TO ADVANCE TO BBL CUP FINAL
BBL Cup (Semi-Final 2nd Leg)
Mersey Tigers 114 (36,48, 78) (Reinking 39, Sullivan 30, Thomson 16)
Newcastle Eagles 85 (24,46,62) (Smith 25, Richard 16, Defoe 13)
Aggregate 204 - 182
Mersey Tigers stormed into the BBL Cup Final after picking up where they left off last season by humiliating arch rivals Newcastle Eagles in another two legged semi-final rout, evoking memories of the BBL play-offs at the end of the last campaign.

The Tigers went into the game with a seven point deficit and were buoyed by the fact that the Eagles were again without Fab Flournoy due to injury. Although in the early exchanges it was the visitors who edged ahead 9-5.

Within a couple of minutes the home side had found some offensive rhythm and an 8-2 run put them in front before successful free-throws by Charles Smith tied things up at 13-13 approaching the midway point of the opening period.

It was still level at 19-19 when Kadiri Richard threw down a dunk for the visitors and then with 44 seconds left, a triple by Andre Lockhart looked to have given the Eagles the upper hand at 24-22. However as Flournoy's men were soon to find out, Nate Reinking had other ideas and he scored four points to ensure the Tigers were 26-24 in front after the first quarter.

There was little between the teams during the second period and with 90 seconds left until the interval, a score by Richard levelled matters at 44-44.

Once again the Tigers had the last say in the period as Andrew Sullivan finished the scoring for the half with a dunk to put his new team 48-46 ahead as the team left the court.

Whatever was said in the Eagles locker room didn't work as the visitors imploded in embarrassing fashion during the third period.

They crumbled right from the restart and within three minutes were down by 9 points at 57-48 after a Reinking triple.

Two free-throws by Sullivan put Tigers 66-51 in front as the nightmare quarter continued to unfold for the Eagles and their misery was complete when a triple by David Aliu helped the home team to a 78-62 lead heading into the final ten minutes of action.

While the lead on the night was a commanding 16 points, Eagles fans will have been reminding themselves that it was only a ten point margin they needed to make up to get to yet another showpiece final,

However those dreams were soon in tatters as the hosts stretched their advantage to a commanding 20 point margin at 87-67 with the misfiring Eagles backcourt unable to match the production of Reinking.

Foul trouble them made things impossible for the Eagles who began to lose their cool with Trey Moore receiving a technical as he fouled out against his former club hot on the heels of forwards Darius Defoe and Kadiri Richard.

None of that mattered to Coach Garbelotto and his players who were only too happy to celebrate another hugely convincing success against the Eagles as they moved to within 40 minutes of another piece of silverware.

MERSEY TIGERS AND NEWCASTLE EAGLES FIGHT TO A FINISH

There is all to play for at Echo Arena this Wednesday evening as Mersey Tigers host Newcastle Eagles in the BBL Cup semi-final second leg.

Eagles take a 97-90 lead into the second leg having rallied from 73-58 down late in the third period, but Tigers' coach Tony Garbelotto isn't daunted by the task facing his team:

"I thought we did a reasonable job offensively - we moved the ball well" said Garbelotto.

Defensively we were poor. We were a step slow on a lot of their offensive moves and for a team that went into the game giving up only 73 points, to concede 97 was disappointing. We were in complete control of the game until Andy Thompson and Tafari Toney got their fourth and fifth fouls in quick succession. After that, they really dominated us from a physical standpoint.

"A seven point lead is pretty small in a game like this, saying that, any lead is a good lead. I would much prefer to go into the game with the lead than a deficit. I like where we are - for large parts of the game we were up plus 10 and even got it to 15. We will make adjustments and there is no doubt that we need to keep all of our players on the floor, if we are going to win the game.

"I was extremely surprised how well we played against the Eagles for three quarters. In the fourth quarter, they came back really strongly and we died, looking like a team that had not played for two weeks. Drew Sullivan was fantastic for us, he did just about everything. For the Eagles Treywas incredible - he willed his team to win, which was extremely impressive."

Tigers bounced back from that loss against Eagles to beat Worcester 93-88 on the road in the BBL Championship the following night, to the delight of Garbelotto:

"I thought again we were really good and I am now really glad that we played the night after Newcastle. The players all showed great professionalism and focus and myself and my coaching staff were much, much more focused than the night before. We again moved the ball well and made some key stops before withstanding a furious Wolves rally at the end.

Nate finally started to get some game conditioning back and more importantly his timing. This will be critical for us on Wednesday.

I doubt there was a better player on a court anywhere in the country this weekend than Drew Sullivan. He showed why he is GB captain and one of the best players this country has produced. 62 points, 16 rebounds, five assists, five steals in two games! And that does not take into account his defence. He was simply awesome this weekend and I for one am just happy that he is on our team and not on any opposition teams."

Eagles coach Fab Flournoy wants an improved performance from his side as they prepare for the second leg: "We played no better than okay against Tigers. We will certainly have to play better on Wednesday night to get the win. We were better offensively than we were defensively although I was delighted with the resolve we showed when 15 down late in the third. Trey and Joe demonstrated again that they are a real handful for anyone to guard in this league.

"We need to play better defence and rebound the ball like we did in the fourth quarter."
Eagles guard Joe Chapman is certainly ready for Wednesday's second leg: "They are a big team and we are a guard orientated team so we have to keep playing to our strengths and keep running the floor since they will keep trying to beat us up inside.

"Seven points isn't a cushion for the second leg. That can disappear in less than a minute so it is pointless in even thinking about it whether on the court or for those people watching off the court."

Chapman has revenge on his mind as Eagles prepare to travel to Liverpool for the second leg: "What is important is that they beat us in two legs last year in the play-off semi-finals and that is what will give us the extra motivation we need.

"I have been thinking about that a lot - we all have. It will be right at the front of our minds as the focus for working hard to get the win across the two legs and get to the final."

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME

REPRINTED FROM THE SHEFFIELD SHARKS GAME NIGHT PROGRAMME

I suppose I was born lucky.  A long time ago I vowed that I wouldn’t do any work that I didn’t enjoy and thankfully for the longest number of years I have been able to fulfil that ambition.

I really love what I do and I am afraid that much as some people want to rain on my parade they are not going to stop me enjoying the life that God has given me.

I am delighted to say that the Sunday Breakfast programme on BBC Radio Manchester is going really well and all this week I have been putting together a special ½ hour programme for this week’s Remembrance show.  I hope everyone likes it but if anyone doesn’t like it then tough.  It is simply my tribute to the service men and women who have given so much.

There is a big discussion going round at the moment about whether everyone should wear a poppy.  I think that the reason these service men and women gave their lives was to ensure our freedom, and, in my opinion, those freedoms include the right to wear or not wear a poppy.

My other major love is of course basketball.  I have been doing my commentary for heaven knows how long and I still love nearly every minute of it.   I am lucky enough to commentate on a number of teams at the moment, namely The Sharks and the Cheshire Jets in the BBL, Leeds Carnegie in EBL Division 1 and the Bradford Dragons in EBL Div 2.

Of course there are clashes at times and other times when the teams play each other it can be really interesting.

Last week it was the turn of the Jets and the Sharks to go head to head at the Northgate Arena.  I have to tell you it was a joy to be a part of such a fantastic basketball occasion.  The game was fantastic, but it was not the first great game I have seen at the Northgate this season.  Their recent defeat of the Eagles was also a sensational game.

This is basketball and one thing is guaranteed...there will be a winner and there will be a loser.

I am delighted to be able to commentate on basketball games but when the day comes that I am no longer commentating on games I hope I am still able to go to games and simply enjoy the spectacular sport that basketball is.  As commentator, I think it is my job to get the home team and the home fans going and help to make the game and the event the best it can be.

At one recent game the visiting coach decided he would give me a lesson in being impartial, it would seem that it was my fault that they lost the game. Not surprisingly he is no longer coaching that team.

I love basketball and get excited when great plays are executed by either team.

This weekend will be an interesting one for me.  Tonight the Sharks will be entertaining the Plymouth Raiders, now with Chez Marks in the team, while tomorrow Leeds Carnegie will take on Brixton Top Cats.  The Brixton boys have been kicking it this season helped on by one of Carnegie’s former stars Ladi Brown (Pictured above).

Ladi is one of my favourite players and when he throws one down there will be an Oh Baby! Whoever he is playing for!

Finally it is back to the Northgate on Sunday for the visit of the Leicester Riders, who will have in their line-up the awesome Phil Missere...one of my favourite players when he was last in the BBL. They are of course coached by the dynamic Rob Paternostro.

Just incase someone somewhere doesn’t know this, I will say it again.  I do what I do for the love of the game and personally I pray that never changes.

LEICESTER RIDERS TURN TO MISSERE TO COUNTER POOR START

Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders inside presence is set to get a major boost with the return of forward Phil Missere. The 27-year-old American was a popular member of the squad two years ago and has agreed a deal to return to the Riders until Christmas.

His addition will fill the void left by injured centre Andrew Bennett, whose knee problem has sidelined him since pre-season. The injury is worse than originally thought and this week he has flown to America for an operation and is not expected to get back to full fitness until the New Year.

"To get a guy like Phil is a massive bonus for us," admitted Coach Rob Paternostro. "It won't take him long to get acclimated to us, our system or the league because he has been here before and because he is a highly intelligent basketball player.

"Physically and athletically he is a real presence. People obviously see the blocks, the rebounds and that was all fantastic in his first year here, but what I took away most from working with him was he has a high basketball IQ. That allowed us to do a lot of different things at both ends of the floor and to get someone like that for us is a certainly going to help."

Missere led the BBL in rebounding, blocked shots and field goal percentage in 2008/09, whilst also chipping in with 13.5 points per game.

His all action style and heart-on-the-sleeve demeanour also made his a firm favourite with the Riders' faithful, who were disappointed to see him leave for Italy last summer.

"Speaking to Phil after he left, he loved his time here. He is the kind of player that fans love to watch because of how he plays, with all the energy and enthusiasm he brings. That's a part of basketball that as a coach you love too and he will boost the crowd and the team when he arrives."

The signing has been helped by the sponsor Babystyle that have sponsored Phil Missere. Manager Director Andy Crane commented "Having seen at first hand the great work the Leicester Riders do within the Primary Schools and Community of Leicestershire, we think this is a fantastic opportunity and are delighted to be able to join forces. We hope that our sponsorship of Phil Missere will enable the club to compete and enjoy success both on and off the court"

Paternostro is still in the process of finding a replacement for Anthony Simpson following his departure to Korea, but remains hopefully he may be able to do a deal and push through all the relevant paperwork in time for the Guildford game.

SHARKS AND EAGLES DISH UP AWESOME GAME FOR THE CAMERAS

After an exciting night's action in the BBL Championship on Friday night, the Newcastle Eagles picked up an impressive 116-106 overtime victory over the One Health Sharks Sheffield, while the Mersey Tigers made slightly easier work of things as they defeated the Essex Pirates 69-45.

The Eagles and the Sharks met at the EIS, Sheffield in front of the Sky TV cameras and provided them with an impressive game between two teams vying for championship points. The visitors lead for the majority of the second half and held onto a four point advantage at 94-98 as the game entered the closing stages.

A Ryan Patton three-pointer got the home side back to within a point at 97-98 and despite a Joe Chapman basket with 30 seconds remaining, a trio of free throws from Patton with 4 seconds left tied the game at 100-100 and sent the game into overtime.

In the extra period, the Eagles took control early on and rattled off a 14-1 tear to take the score out to 116-103 and secure the victory from the visitors.

Impressive scoring from both sides was topped by Charles Smith as he netted 33 points for the Eagles and he was ably assisted by Chapman with 32 and Trey Moore with 28 points respectively. Marcus Stout led the scoring for the Sharks with 30 points.

At the Echo Arena on Friday night, the Tigers moved themselves into joint second position as they inflicted the fourth successive defeat upon the Pirates in the League.

The home side took control in the second period thanks to an 18-4 burst to take the score out to 34-19 and they maintained their advantage throughout the remainder of the game.

Andrew Sullivan top-scored for the Tigers with 14 points, assisted by David Aliu with 12 points for the home side. Daniel Briglia top-scored for the Pirates with 11 points.

BIG WEEKEND FOR THE ROCKS SIGNALS CHANGE OF FORTUNE

An upbeat EJ Harrison was today reflecting on a change in fortune for Glasgow Rocks who stopped a worrying three game BBL Championship losing streak in comprehensive fashion over the weekend with back to back road wins at Worcester and Plymouth.

Having headed into the double header under extreme pressure and potentially facing a five game losing streak had things not gone their way, the Rocks emerged unscathed and successful which means they will now head into their next BBL Championship fixture with real confidence.

A perfect weekend has really lit a fire under the clubs' season and point guard Harrison claims it evidences that their early season slump was not an accurate reflection of the teams talent.

"This was a very good weekend for us." explained Harrison."All last week Sterl got us really motivated for these two games and fortunately for us, we came out on top in both."

"It was definitely a team effort and very much a team weekend." He continued, "We shot the ball pretty swell from outside and different guys contributed when we needed it in both games. "I think it also shows that we are a good team that just got off to a bit of a bad start."

He added, "You always get injuries each year but if we can stay as healthy as possible then I really do think we can make a noise come the end of the season."

The Rocks certainly did it the hard way on Saturday night at Worcester when they trailed by double-digits but much to the dismay of Wolves Head Coach Paul James, the visitors overturned the deficit with a Nick Livas score in the dying seconds to eek out an 81-79 win.

Their 87-75 success against UCP Marjon Plymouth Raiders on Sunday was a little more comfortable thanks to some terrific leadership from Davis who thanks to some stunning three-point shooting, led the way with 23 points alongside Mike Copeland who finished with the same number on the scorer-sheet.

Raiders meanwhile were left ruing their inconsistency and lack of perimeter defence on Davis and they have still not chalked up a first league win this season having also lost on Friday night 96-85 against Mersey Tigers.

They are however not the only winless team at the foot of the table with Worthing Thunder, Essex Pirates and Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders all having drawn blanks in their continued search for an opening BBL Championship victory.

Thunder and the Pirates both made long trips North on Friday night but the pair left empty handed as One Health Sharks Sheffield kept their unbeaten record in tact with a comfortable 107-84 success against Worthing while Newcastle Eagles steamrollered Essex 112-43.

Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders suffered their first home court loss since January as they almost pulled off a great escape against Cheshire Jets but just fell short in crunch time to go down 71-66.

Having trailed by as many as sixteen, the home team launched an astonishing fight back to get within one point but Jets not only clung on by their fingernails to secure the win but also to remain early pacesetters in the BBL Championship with a perfect four wins from their first four league games.

CHESHIRE JETS GET THE BETTER OF EAGLES IN ANOTHER CLASSIC

Cheshire Jets 76 (17, 41, 55) (Schneck 22, Greer 20, Bell 10, Gayle 10)
Newcastle Eagles 75 (16, 38, 50) (Moore 29, Lockhart 12, Chapman 11)

In another night of high drama at Northgate Arena, ex Cheshire Jets star Trey Moore experienced the ultimate bitter-sweet return to his former club after he amassed an impressive 29 points but missed a crucial free-throw in the dying seconds and then a last ditch opportunity to win a thrilling game for Newcastle Eagles at Northgate Arena.

The result resigned the reigning BBL title holders to a third loss in four BBL Championship games and means they are still winless on the road this season in the league while at the opposite end of the spectrum, a delighted Cheshire Jets remain unbeaten home and away, and now sit atop the BBL Championship table.

The hosts raced out of the blocks and having started with a triple from Gareth Murray, they caused Eagles player-coach Fab Flournoy to burn a time-out just three minutes into the game as they rattled off the first seven points of the contest. .

The time-out paid dividends for Flournoy and by the end of the first period, his team had worked their way back to within one point of the Jets at 17-16.

Much of the Eagles sluggish start was due to former Jets playmaker and offensive weapon Trey Moore getting into early foul trouble and having to sit down for the visitors.

The second quarter was a similar story with the Jets just shading matters and as the teams left the court to head for the locker rooms, it was a one shot game at 41-38 to the home team.

In a similar story to the start of the first half, the Eagles struggled offensively at the beginning of the second half and could only muster two scores in almost six minutes. That meant the Jets were able to manoeuvre their way to a 49-42 advantage after a basket by the awesome Quemont Greer.

The hosts still led by seven at 67-60 heading into the final six minutes of the game but things got tense when the visitors finally came alive and scored eight unanswered points to take the lead with a couple of minutes to play.

It seemed like the worse possible time for Jets to suffer an offensive drought and it set up a nerve shredding climax. With the scores tied at 74-74 with only 11 seconds left on the game clock, Trey Moore scored but also missed a free-throw and that was absolutely critical.

And rather fittingly, MVP Matt Schneck stroked home two free-throws after being fouled by Andrew Bridge and while the home team had to sweat it out as Moore failed with the last shot of the game, it was a truly fantastic and thrilling victory.

Footnote

To be honest this was one of the games where nobody deserved to be on the losing side.

This was as competitive a game as I have seen for a very long time. The Eagles big guns were misfiring while the bigs for Cheshire were simply getting it done in the paint. Greer and Schneck were truly awesome but so was Stephen Gayle who really does not get the credit he deserves.

This was a game that everyone concerned with British Basketball could be truly proud of...

I know I am!
