DATELINE 23rd NOV 2009
Welcome to the EISS for this BBL Cup Quarter Final against the Everton Tigers.
The BBL Cup is the first of the trophies to be decided and tonight will complete the line-up for the two legged Semi Finals.
Else where there have been some interesting results in the EBL with the City of Sheffield Hatters going down to their first loss to the Nottingham Wildcats in the Women’s Game. As I write the only unbeaten team is Leeds Carnegie.
Looks like EBL Div 1 Women could develop into something very special this season.
EBL Div 1 Men is also looking interesting with last year’s winners Reading Rockets still looking for their first victory of the season.
Top of the league is Manchester Magic who are 3 and 0 and having seen them play this season, they are going to be tough. Derby Trailblazers are also 3 and 0 while Leicester Warriors, Taunton Tigers and Leeds Carnegie and all 2 and 1.
For the past few weeks I have had the pleasure of seeing regular NBA games from the USA. I have always been convinced that I could not commentate on an NBA game as there is just so much stuff going on every second. Just how many Oh BABY’s can there be in one game?
Seeing the top teams regularly has convinced me more than ever that theirs is a different world. Every team from the top to the bottom has great players and with a few exceptions any one of a number of teams could go all the way this season.
I love the look of Orlando Magic with Dwight Howard but the Lakers with Kobe will be there or thereabouts again. The Cavaliers with LeBron James, the Celtics with Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, the Denver Nuggets with Carmelo Anthony, the Phoenix Suns with Steve Nash and Amar’e Stoudemire …I could go on.
What amazes me is the sheer number of games these guys play. NBA teams can play up to 4 games a week and have to travel thousands of miles to get there. I believe the team that wins the whole thing will play almost 100 games. I could be wrong!
As I say I am trying my best to keep up with what’s going on but I find it impossible. So I just watch the games and enjoy them. Let the chips fall where they might.
I am also trying to keep up with Andre Smith and his team in Turkey. I hear that they were on TV last week but unfortunately I completely missed it.
There is no doubt that Basketball is as strong as it ever has been around the world.
The next big thing for Chris Finch and his GB team is to find out if Great Britain has been given a wild card for the FIBA World Championships in Turkey in 2010.
I for one hope they get it because it will be another excuse to go to that fantastic country. It will also show that GB is being taken seriously in world basketball. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and lets hope we are not in a group with the boys from the NBA.
